PORT DESCRIPTION
Location: Volos, or Volo, is located at the head of the Gulf of Pagasitikos on the eastern
Greek mainland.
General overview: A breakwater, running from the E part of the harbour to its centre,
protects vessels at all piers. Harbour is safe and sheltered. The port is on the Greek
side of Europe/Middle East seabridge.
Approx 3,000m of quays able to take vessels up to 35,000dwt, 200m length with draft of
9.8m.
Max size: No length limit. Max ship’s draft up to 9.75m.
PRE ARRIVAL INFORMATION
ETA’s: ETA to be advised through agents 72 and 24 hours prior to arrival, to include the
following information:
1. Vessel’s name;
2. Nationality;
3. Callsign;
4. LOA;
5. Draft;
6. Grt; and
7. Information for discharging cargo.

Radio: Hellas Radio (SVA), Iraklion, Limnos or Corfu Radio can be used for passing
messages at long range. The stations work throughout 24 hours.
Inmarsat communication is possible.
Health regulations: Pratique should be applied for on arrival and cannot be applied for by
radio.
Customs and immigration: There is an allowance of 1-2 packets of cigarettes per day. One
bottle wine/spirit is allowed out of bond. Passports and shore passes are required.
Notices of readiness: NOR should be tendered 24 hours in advance, in writing or by cable,
according to charter party, but will only be accepted between 0800-1700hrs.
Agency: Agents are compulsory for all vessels.
NAVIGATION
Port limits: The port limits are defined by the breakwater surrounding the port basin.
Sea buoys, fairways and channels: Depth at entrance is 10.67m.
From the vicinity of Lat 39°20.5’N, Long 022°57.5’E (approx 1nm SE of the head of
the breakwater) the fairway leads WNW and NNW passing (with positions given from the head
of the breakwater):
SSW of Akra Anavrou (1.1nm ESE). Akra Anavrou light (white metal framework tower) is
exhibited on the point; then:
NNE of Akra Seskoulo (3.75 cables SSE). Akra Seskoulo light (white metal framework tower
on hut) is exhibited 1.5 cables S of the point. A conspicuous ruined white house stands
close within the point; then:
SSW of the foul patch (1.5 cables SE); then:
NNE of Akra Iolkou (2.5 cables SSW), the SW entrance point of the harbour, which is
fronted by depths of 5.0m or less extending nearly 0.75 cable offshore; then:
SSW and WSW of the head of the breakwater which should be given a berth of approx 1 cable.
A light (white metal framework tower on pedestal, green band) is exhibited at the head of
the breakwater.
Pilot: Compulsory. Pilot station is on VHF ch 6. Pilot embarks at the anchorage by pilot
boat.
Anchorages: Anchorage is situated 2nm from the port entrance. There is anchorage outside
the bar in depths of 9.0-22.0m.
Tidal range and flow: Range 0.25m.
Dock density: 1025.
Weather: Prevailing winds: NE’ly-E’ly-SE’ly.
VHF: VHF ch 7, 12. Pilot VHF ch 6.
Charts: BA 1571, 1556. Admiralty Pilot NP48.
Traffic schemes: Traffic schemes have not been adopted.
Tugs: Compulsory. Six tugs are available.
Coast guard: Volos Central Port Authority; Pagasitikos Gulf and area is a distance of 10nm
from shore.
Berthing: Berthing is available throughout 24 hours.
BERTHING INFORMATION
BERTHS AND CARGO
Names/Nos: General cargo/Bulk berths: The Railway pier has 995m of berthing and depths to
9.75m.
In the centre of the harbour is a 240m pier with 605m of berthing and depths to 8.23m.
The new pier on W side has 980m of berthing and depths to 9.75m.
Tanker berths: One pier, operated by Shell, BP and Mobil has 30m of berthing and depth
8.23m.
Ro-Ro berths: Facilities available.
Facilities: There are 7 shore cranes of 8-27t capacity and 5 mobile cranes of 8-140t
capacity.
Storage: Grain silo jetty available and storage area includes 11,000sq m of covered space
and 60,000sq m open space. All reefer storage is in private hands.
Cargo: There are no cargo restrictions or limitations.
Barges: Barges are available from a private company.
Ballast/slop reception: Available by privately operated road tankers.
Security: Ship’s watchman is recommended. Police, tel: 108, VHF ch 12; Fire Service,
tel: 199; Ambulance, tel: 166.
Cargo documentation: Cargo manifest for Port Police. Cargo clearance by Custom House is
needed.

Repairs: Minor repairs carried out.
Docking facilities: Not available.
Bunkers/water/stores: Fresh water: Available alongside and by barges with previous notice.
Bunkering: Available.
Provisions: Available.
Medical facilities: Public and private hospitals available. Advance notice of required
medical attention is required.
Transport: Nearest airport: N Anchialou, approx 15km.
Nearest railway: In town.
Crew change: There are numerous hotels in town.
Consuls: France, Germany, Italy and Sweden.
Banks: There are 10 Greek Banks available. The local currency is the Drachma.
Public holidays: Subject to all Greek National holidays and Dec 6 (St Nicholas’ Day).
Working hours: Normally 0700-1400hrs; overtime available on request from 1400-2100hrs.
Developments: A pier for specialised container handling is to be developed at the W side
of the port.
Surveyors: There are independent surveyors for draft surveys, cargo claims, damages and P
& I Clubs.
Recreation: Passports or Seamen’s books required. Port is within the town limits.
Garbage: Private company is available for garbage collection.
Officials and visitors: Visitors allowed with permission from Port Police.
Fumigation: Private companies can be requested from Piraeus.
Pollution: Pollution regulations are in accordance with Marpol 73/78 and National
regulations.
