PORT DESCRIPTION
Location: Pylos (or Pilos) is a small port in Navarino Bay on the SW coast of Greece.
General overview: There are facilities for wet and dry bulks, and the port is often used as a bunkering station. The harbour is only suitable for small vessels.
Traffic figures: Approx 800 vessels visit the port annually.
Max size: Largest vessel handled: LOA 110m alongside pier.

PRE ARRIVAL INFORMATION
ETA’s: Initial ETA to be sent to vessel’s agent on departure from last port. Additional ETA’s to be sent 48, 24 and 12 hours prior to arrival to the vessel’s agent. One hour prior to arrival, port authorities, pilot and agents should be contacted by VHF giving exact time of arrival.
The ETA message should include: Ship’s particulars, cargo information, dangerous cargo (if any on board, with details), health condition and stowaway details (if any).

Documentation required: The following documentation is required:

Port authorities (one copy of each):
1. Ship’s particulars
2. Training certificates
3. Master’s Health Declaration
4. Master’s Declaration concerning disposal of any slops and bunkers, if any.
5. RLM Form (state form) declaring all crew on board on arrival
6. No Stowaways declaration
7. Load Line certificate.

Customs authorities (two copies of each):
1. Ship’s Stores List Declaration
2. Officer’s and Crew’s Personal Effects Declaration
3. Master’s Declaration that all electrical items, not sealed, and other goods will remain on board.
4. Masters Declaration for bunkers and cargo on board.
Special forms exist for all documents but apply only to liner vessels. These are delivered on board on arrival.

Radio: Hellas Radio (SVA), Iraklion, Limnos or Corfu Radio can be used for passing messages at long range. The stations work throughout 24 hours.

Inmarsat communication is possible.

Health regulations: Pratique should be applied for on arrival and cannot be applied for by radio.

Customs and immigration: Customs allowances: Each officer and crew member is allowed 1 bottle of spirits and 1 carton of cigarettes each.

Immigration: Immigration authorities issue crew passes. For EC nationals there are no immigration procedures. There are special regulations for nationals of countries such as Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Yugoslavia and South American countries.

Crew being repatriated to non European countries must have a ticket which the agent must show to the authorities, agent’s guarantees are requested by various authorities.
Notices of readiness: Can be tendered anytime but will only be accepted between 0800-1700hrs.

NAVIGATION
Port limits: The port limits are the lighthouse of 'Nissos Pylos' Island and Chelonike Island.
Pilot: Private pilot is available throughout 24 hours on request at 24 hours notice. Send ETA 48 hours and confirm 24 hours prior to arrival. Pilots tel:723 22255, telex: 252152 VRET GR. Pilot boards 1nm seaward of Nisis Pilos in fair weather, otherwise in sheltered water closer in to Pilos
Anchorages: Good anchorage for vessels of any size in Navarino Bay. At Sfaktiria Island there is a deep water LPG transfer anchorage available for ship-to-ship transfers to the W or to the N of Proti Island, depending on the direction of winds, in depths of 110m. Fresh water and provisions can be supplied.

Tidal range and flow: Range approx 0.4m.
Dock density: 1025.
Weather: Prevailing winds: NW’ly-S-SW’ly-SE’ly. Sudden and strong N winds, prevalent in winter, are a danger to vessels at anchor near, or using, the port.
VHF: VHF ch 12 and 16.
Principal navigation aids: A light is exhibited from the NE corner of a mole extending 250m in a N direction to form the W side of a small harbour basin.

Tugs: One tug available.

Names/Nos: There are 2 piers, one with a total length of 600m, 10m depth alongside, able to accept vessels up to 40m LOA. The second pier is 100m length, 3.3m depth alongside.
Barges: Available.

Repairs: Available. Three port authority workships carry out minor repairs. Scamp underwater hull cleaning available.

Pilot dues:
Calculated from the Nrt of the vessel and the time of arrival.
Port Dues:
Calculated from Grt of the vessel. Port dues apply in loaded vessels which proceed to the port for small repairs and underwater cleaning.
