NAVIGATION INFORMATION
PORT DESCRIPTION
Location: The port of Patras is on the northern shore of Peloponnesus on the Greek
mainland. There are two entrances to the port with one green light and one red light
flashing to indicate the N and one red flashing indicating the S. The port consists of 3
basins with depths of 8.5m and 10.5m. The outer breakwater is 1.85km and there are 2,200m
of quayside well served by rail. There is one firefighting vessel but no lighters or
barges. There are 2 warehouses, reefer chambers and 2 passenger reception buildings with
regular services crossing the Adriatic Sea to Italy. Sheds, warehouses and quays occupy
some 70,000sq m.
General overview: Traffic figures: Approx 970 vessels visit the port annually.
PRE ARRIVAL INFORMATION
ETA’s: Initial ETA to be sent to vessel’s agent on departure from last port.
Additional ETA’s to be sent 48, 24 and 12 hours prior to arrival to the vessel’s
agent. One hour prior to arrival, port authorities, pilot and agents should be contacted
by VHF giving exact time of arrival.
The ETA message should include: Ship’s particulars, cargo information, dangerous cargo
(if any on board, with details), health condition and stowaway details (if any).
Documentation required: The following documentation is required:
Port authorities (one copy of each):
1. Ship’s particulars
2. Training certificates
3. Master’s Health Declaration
4. Master’s Declaration concerning disposal of any slops and bunkers, if any.
5. RLM Form (state form) declaring all crew on board on arrival
6. No Stowaways declaration
7. Load Line certificate.
Customs authorities (two copies of each):
1. Ship’s Stores List Declaration
2. Officer’s and Crew’s Personal Effects Declaration
3. Master’s Declaration that all electrical items, not sealed, and other goods will
remain on board.
4. Masters Declaration for bunkers and cargo on board.
Special forms exist for all documents but apply only to liner vessels. These are delivered
on board on arrival.
Radio: Hellas Radio (SVA), Iraklion, Limnos or Corfu Radio can be used for passing
messages at long range. The stations work throughout 24 hours.
Inmarsat communication is possible.
Health regulations: Pratique should be applied for on arrival and cannot be applied for by
radio.
Customs and immigration: Customs allowances: Each officer and crew member is allowed 1
bottle of spirits and 1 carton of cigarettes each.
Immigration: Immigration authorities issue crew passes. For EC nationals there are no
immigration procedures. There are special regulations for nationals of countries such as
Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Yugoslavia and South American
countries.
Crew being repatriated to non European countries must have a ticket which the agent must
show to the authorities, agent’s guarantees are requested by various authorities.
Notices of readiness: Can be tendered anytime but will only be accepted between
0800-1700hrs.
NAVIGATION
Pilot: Compulsory for all merchant vessels with pilot meeting ship 800m off the port.
Pilotage available at night in emergency and all pilot vessels equipped with VHF ch 12.
Tidal range and flow: 0.3m.
Dock density: 1025.
Weather: Prevailing winds: NW’ly.
VHF: VHF ch 12.
Charts: 1676, 2404.
Restrictions: Night-time pilotage is restricted to emergencies.
Tugs: Compulsory for vessels over 1000 grt; two tugs available.
BERTHING INFORMATION
BERTHS AND CARGO
General cargo/Bulk berths: Over 2,100m of quayage includes the following:
Quay Psilis - length 180m, depth 7.00m; Gounari Jetty, berths 1 and 2 - 180m, 8.50m;
berths 3 and 4 - 350m, 8.50m; Jetty Agiou Nikolaou, berths 5 to 8 - 400m, 8.50m; berths 9
and 10 - 424m, 6.50 to 8.50m; Jetty Astinges - total 380m, 8.50 to 11.50m; Quay Glyfadas -
244m, 10.50m; Northern Jetty - 300m, 12.0m.
Container berths: Two berths totalling 400m with depths of 8.50m have parking areas of
12,000 and 22,000 sq m respectively. There is also room at Quay Glyfadas for vessels up to
500m long with a further 80,000 sq m of space.
Tanker berths: Texaco operate a berth at Rion for vessels drawing 14m.
Ro-Ro berths: Quay Glyfadas - see general/bulk and container berths.
Facilities: There are 7 mobile cranes up to 118t capacity, 6 cranes 5-22t capacity, and
over 20 fork lift trucks, capacity lift 2-5t.
Storage: There are sheds and warehouses behind the quays and over 100,000sq m of container
parking space.

Developments: The breakwater is being extended by 350m to 1,530m.
