Katakolon Port
PORT DESCRIPTION
Location: Katacolon (or Catacolon, Catacolo) is situated on the W coast of the Greek mainland.
General overview: Two breakwaters protect an entrance, 250m in width; depths vary from 30m at the entrance to 1.5m in the harbour. Those sections of the port not open to silting have depths to 7.9m for commercial traffic. There is an inner anchorage, deemed safe in most weathers.
Traffic figures: Approx 200 vessels visit the port annually.
Load Line zone: Summer.
Max size: Max safe draft, 6.5m.

PRE ARRIVAL INFORMATION
ETA's: Initial ETA to be sent to vessel's agent on departure from last port. Additional ETA's to be sent 48, 24 and 12 hours prior to arrival to the vessel's agent. One hour prior to arrival, port authorities, pilot and agents should be contacted by VHF giving exact time of arrival.
The ETA message should include: Ship's particulars, cargo information, dangerous cargo (if any on board, with details), health condition and stowaway details (if any).
Documentation required:

Communications: Olympia Radio ("SVA") receives distress or urgent messages and public communication (working channel). Watch frequencies VHF/FM, 2182kHz and HF/D.S.C as follows:
MF 2187.5kHz.
HF 4207.5kHz, 6312kHz, 8414.5kHz, 12577kHz, 16804.5kHz.
Heraklio, Limnos and Corfu Radio for general watch calling frequencies.
The stations work throughout 24 hours.
Inmarsat communication is possible.
VHF: Ch 12.
Health regulations: Pratique should be applied for on arrival and cannot be applied for by radio.
Customs and immigration: Customs allowances: Each officer and crew member is allowed 1 bottle of spirits and 1 carton of cigarettes each.
Immigration: Immigration authorities issue crew passes. For EU nationals there are no Immigration procedures. There are special regulations for nationals of countries such as Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Yugoslavia and South American countries.
Crew being repatriated to non European countries must have a ticket which the agent must show to the authorities. Agent's guarantees are requested by various authorities.
Notices of readiness: Can be tendered anytime but will only be accepted between 0800-1700hrs.

NAVICATION
Sea buoys, fairways and channels: Directions for entering harbour:
Approach from south: Akra Katakolou should be passed at a distance of not less than 0.5nm.
Entering harbour: A dredged channel, width approx 250m and leading SW, is entered between the head of the S breakwater, on which is exhibited a light (metal framework tower on pedestal, elevation 10m), and a green conical buoy, moored approx 300m NNW, which is the NE of 3 similar buoys marking the NW edge of the dredged channel. Care is necessary in avoiding shoals which extend a short distance from the head of the S breakwater.
Caution: NW of the dredged area, depths are generally less than 5.0m decreasing towards the N breakwater. Shoals of less than 1.0m extend as much as 0.1nm from the sea wall in front of the town.
Pilot: Pilotage is not compulsory. The port has 1 private pilot whose services may be used provided sufficient advance notice is passed through agent.
Anchorages: Vessels may anchor 0.5nm from the jetty.
Tidal range and flow: Range 0.3m.
Dock density: 1025.
Weather: Prevailing winds: NW'ly.
Charts: BA 189, 2404. Admiralty Pilot NP47.
Traffic schemes: None.
Tugs: Not available.
Coast guard: A patrol boat and SAR craft is available.

BERTHS AND CARGO
Names/Nos: General cargo/bulk berths: Total quayage 600m, of which some 200m has a max depth of 7.9m.
Passenger/cruise berths: Passenger vessels may berth alongside.
Facilities: Vessels load and discharge with own gear.
Storage: Available by arrangement with ship's agent.
Security: There is a Port Police Station.

Bunkers/water/stores: Fresh water: Available, capacity 20m3/hr.
Bunkering: Service provided by road tanker.
Medical facilities: Available in Pyrgos, 13km, Tel: +30 621 22222.
