Sea buoys, fairways and channels: The small inner port - where vessels of 300t can enter -
has a narrow entrance of 50m, but is totally safe with a depth of 1.83-3.66m. The new port
covers a basin of 600,00sq m and is formed by 2 breakwaters, 1 x 980m in length and the
other 600m. It has an entrance width of 250m and ships of up to 8.54m draft can moor
alongside the N breakwater.
From the vicinity of Lat 35°22'N, Long 025°10’E the approach leads SSW and WSW passing
(with positions given from the head of the outer mole Lat 35° 21.2’N Long
025°09.4’E):
ESE and SSE of the head of the outer mole. A light (column with gallery on hexagonal
concrete building, green band) is exhibited at the head of the mole. Then:
NNW of the head of Provlis No 6, 2.5 cables SW. A light (concrete tower with gallery) is
exhibited at the head of the mole. If entering harbour during a strong N wind it is
necesary to keep close to the outer mole.
Pilot: Compulsory for vessels of more than 500t entering the harbour. In good weather the
pilot meets vessels from 5 cables to 1nm NE of the harbour entrance. In bad weather ships
should approach the entrance.
Anchorages: During the summer good anchorage may be obtained 7.5 cables N of Iraklion in a
depth of 33m, muddy sand, with the fort bearing 180°. Small vessels can anchor closer to
the outer mole.
The anchorage is entirely exposed to the prevailing winds and boatwork may be difficult
for much of the day.
In the event of bad weather shelter should be sought in Kolpos Irakliou or the anchorages
S of Nisis Dhia.
Tidal range and flow: Range 0.3m approx.

vessels to enter harbour early in the day before the Etesians have reached full strength.
Winds from E cause a scend at the quays in the SW part of the harbour.
